Show processes command

A command available on most Cisco platforms; used to display software process CPU and memory utilisation statistics.

show processes [memory options | cpu options]

Common memory options include;

  • memory pid number - display detailed memory utilisation information for the specified process ID number
  • memory sorted - display memory utilisation information for all processes, sorted high to low based on current memory utilisation

Common cpu options include;

  • cpu history - display cpu utilisation history graphs (per second for last minute, per minute for last hour and per hour for last 72hrs)
  • cpu sorted - display cpu utilisation information for all processes, sorted high to low based on current cpu utilisation

show processes memory sorted - display memory utilisation information for all processes, sorted high to low based on current memory utilisation

show processes history - display cpu utilisation history graphs (per second for last minute, per minute for last hour and per hour for last 72hrs)

show processes cpu - display standard cpu utilisation information with information on last 5 seconds, 1 minute and 5 minutes

show proc cpu sorted | e 0.00% 0.00% 0.00% - display standard cpu utilisation, sort and exclude processes that have not utilised the cpu in the last 5 minutes

Be aware the simply using the command, particularly multiple times in succession, will itself increase the CPU utilisation and thus may give an inaccurate impression of actual CPU utilisation.

The Linux command equivalents are the ps command and top command

The Extreme command equivalent is the hidden top command

The Vyatta command equivalents are the show hardware cpu command and show system processes command

The Blue Coat ProxySG command equivalent is the show cpu command
