Enable command, Cisco

This article deals with the exec mode enable command. For the global configuration mode command of the same name, see the enable password command and enable secret command articles.

A command available on most Cisco platforms; used to enter a higher privilege level, most commonly privileged/enable mode (privilege level 15,) for the user account that executes the command.

enable - enter privileged (aka enable) mode

enable 8 - enter privilege level 8

Use the disable command to enter a lower privilege level (user mode)

Use the show privilege command to display your current privilege level

Use the privilege command to specify commands a user account with a specific privilege level can execute

Use the privilege level command to specify the default privilege level (normally 1) for users connecting via the console, AUX and tty lines, avoiding the use of the enable command altogether. These accounts must actually have the privilege level that you specify.

Use the user command to specify the privilege level a local user account has
